Welcome to GamerFish

This site is still WAY under construction. I'm trying to put together a spot where people interested building a website similar to the one I built for Good Intentions can get the info and files they need to do so. When done, I'll have the following areas set up:

  1. Drupal install files with all of the mods needed for a basic setup to run and manage a World of Warcraft guild website. This includes a calendar, WoWRoster, and the Drupal content management system to tie it all together. And a bunch of bells and whistles on top of that.
  2. Datbase files that include templates for some of the features of the website (like strategy guides).
  3. Themes that work both with the website package and with other drupal setups.
  4. Sandbox / demo site so folks can play around with the website settings and take it for a spin. Please check back later for updates and downloads!

How to display the GMOTD in a Drupal block

First of all you have to have WoWRoster Installed.  Basically, the snippet below allows you to pull the data from the WoWRoster table and display it in a block.

Drupal Theme: World of Warcraft Green

This is the Green-Bannered Drupal theme (for World of Warcraft) that can be used on Drupal-based websites.  For an example select teh WoW Green option in the theme selection box, or visit the Good Intentions website.

Site Hosting and Drupal

In setting up this site I did a LOT of research on hosts. Moved my sites around a bunch trying to find a good (cheap) hosting solution. I was looking for a shared host rather than a VPS due to cost and my expected server load. Unfortunately, what I found was that most hosts (even though they claim to support Drupal) aren't set up to do so on their shared servers. I ended up with Hostgator because it runs the site smoothly and quickly. It's the only one I found that does.

I also tried Servage. Great customer service and they were more than willing to try and help solve any problems, but I kept coming up against their maximum number of database queries per hour. This frequently resulted in shutting down my website until it reset. Even when that wasn't happening, though, page loadtimes were as long as 20 seconds. This would happen on clean / unmodded installs of all CMS systems, which to me indicates that their servers aren't set up to support the basic software packages they offer.

IX Web Hosting had great prices, but the pageload times were evil. Many others I just looked at, but the limits on database queries, accounts, etc., just weren't worth it.
